1914 Pink Blush Tulips 20x30 |
I paint because it feels so natural. When the world feels chaotic, I
pick up the brush and a calm comes over me, assuring me that I am in the right place at the right time. All my energy comes
into one focal point and I am at peace. Some people fish, some meditate, I paint. I
come from a family of artists and learned early on to look at things with a keen eye. I have very early memories of looking
deep into the center of a pink tulip at the delicate black stamen poking up where all the petals come together. I remember
patiently watching a poppy bud to see if I could witness it’s opening and standing in awe surrounded by a mass of golden
daffodils that rose taller than my knees.
As a devout gardener, I am often inspired
by some detail of nature. Once I begin painting, describing the beauty of the object is less important than capturing it’s
miraculous essence. I like taking a fragile, impermanent thing, such as a flower, and isolating it, enlarging it and dramatizing
it’s color and movement to make a strong, powerful and lasting statement. In the process, I pay homage to the universal
connection of all things.
My aim is to make art which takes on a life of it’s
own and moves us beyond our usual way of thinking and being. I want my tulip paintings to make you want to look deeper into
the center where all the petals come together.
